Here's the scenario: you bought a Paddywax mushroom candle that's too pretty to burn. Or your jar candle is halfway gone but the vessel is solid glass you'd hate to toss. Or it's the week before Christmas and you just remembered you need a gift for your aunt, and she'd actually prefer something homemade.

Before You Start: Know Your Wax
Not all wax behaves the same. Flip your candle over and find the wax type:
- Soy wax (used in most Paddywax candles): melts around 120–150°F, forgiving, holds fragrance well
- Paraffin: harder, melts around 130–150°F, great scent throw
- Beeswax: melts around 145–165°F, natural but expensive

Step 1: Gather Your Tools
You'll need:
- A double boiler setup (or a heat-safe glass measuring cup inside a pot of simmering water)

Don't skip the thermometer. You can't judge 180°F by eye, and that's where most home candle-pouring goes wrong.
Step 2: Melt with a Double Boiler—No Shortcuts
Fill a pot with about two inches of water. Place your heat-safe container with the wax inside, set the burner to medium-low, and be patient. The target is a gentle water bath at 160–180°F.
When I compared this method side by side with microwave melting and direct stovetop heat, the double boiler won every single time. Direct heat creates hot spots that burn off your fragrance oils. A microwave heats unevenly and can cause superheating, where the wax looks calm but erupts when you touch it.
The double boiler is slower. It's also the only method that consistently works.
Step 3: Watch the Temperature Like It's Your Job
Wax is not something to push. Most soy wax melts completely at 140–150°F. Going above 185°F risks burning the fragrance and releasing irritating fumes.
People assume the answer to a slow melt is more heat—I've been guilty of that in my rush-order days. The assumption is that higher heat = faster turnaround. The reality is that overheated wax smells burnt, pours thin, and gives you a candle that flames unevenly. Then you get to do it all over again.
Step 4: Strain and Pour at the Right Moment
Once everything is liquid, remove it from the heat and let it settle to about 140–150°F.
Pour the melted wax through a fine strainer or cheesecloth into a clean pouring pitcher. This catches wick tabs, charred wick bits, and any debris from the original candle. Skipping this step is how you end up with black flecks suspended in your new candle.
Then pour into your new container. If you're reusing a glass jar—and Paddywax jars are thick enough to handle a second hot pour—make sure it's at room temperature. A cold jar can crack when hit with 150°F wax.
Step 5: Center the Wick Without Getting Frustrated
Wick placement is the most annoying part of candle making. Two methods work:
- Wick centering tool: sits across the top of the jar and locks the wick in place.
- Pencil trick: wrap a rubber band around two pencils, slide the wick between them, and let the pencils rest across the jar rim.
On the bottom, attach the wick tab to the jar with a dab of hot glue and let it set for a minute before pouring.
Step 6: Wait the Full Cure Time (This Is Where Everyone Fails)
Your candle will look ready in three hours. It's not. The inside is still cooling, and the molecular structure hasn't stabilized.
In March 2024, we had a client who needed 30 repurposed candles for a corporate dinner. We poured at 10 a.m., and by 5 p.m. they looked perfect. Someone lit one early that night. It tunneled straight down the center. The outer wax was still contracting internally. We waited the remaining 24 hours for the rest. Not one problem after that.
24 hours minimum. 48 is better. This is non-negotiable.
Step 7: Get Creative with the Reuse
If you don't want to make a new candle, melted wax has several worthwhile uses:
- Christmas ornaments: pour melted wax into small silicone ornament molds, and press a ribbon loop in before it hardens. Hang them near warm lights and they release a gentle scent. - Wax melts: pour a thin layer onto a baking sheet, let it harden, break it into pieces, and use them in a wax warmer. This is exactly how Paddywax wax melts work, except you're getting a second life out of an old candle.

What About Reed Diffusers? (Don't Melt Those)
Reed diffusers work on a totally different principle: fragrance oil travels up the reeds and evaporates. There's no wax to melt. When a Paddywax reed diffuser loses its scent, just add a few drops of fragrance oil directly to the base to refresh it. No heat involved.
And if you want to make your own reed diffuser, the same logic applies: you'd mix a carrier oil with fragrance at room temperature. There's no melting step.
Seven Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Freezing the candle to remove the wax. Freezing makes glass brittle and increases cracking risk. The double boiler method works better and saves your jars.
- Microwaving the wax. Superheating is a real risk. Wax can look solid and suddenly splatter when moved.
- Adding fragrance oils above 150°F. They degrade and the scent burns off before the candle ever cures.
- Adding cinnamon, cloves, or spices. Spice particles are combustion points. Don't do this, no matter what the YouTube comment says.
- Skipping the strainer. You'll get debris and wick remnants in your final product.
- Pouring into a cold container. Sudden temperature swings crack glass.
- Making environmental claims without proof. Per FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), a claim like “recyclable” or “eco-friendly” must be substantiated. Products labeled recyclable should be recyclable for at least 60% of consumers. If you're selling repurposed candle products, read the guidelines first.

Melting down candle wax isn't complicated, but it is a process that rewards patience. Use the double boiler. Watch your temperatures. Wait the cure time. The result is a candle that looks close to the original—and with a repurposed Paddywax jar or a preserved mushroom candle container, you get something with a bit of personality.
